Location: Watertower Square – Cooling Tower
Date Completed: September 2024
Services: Commercial HVAC & Refrigeration
Project Overview
Building Management Partners’ Commercial HVAC & Refrigeration team recently completed an energy-saving upgrade for the cooling tower at Watertower Square. The nearby bed & breakfast had experienced frequent complaints due to the high-torque motor startup causing loud squealing noises. Our team was brought in to provide a solution that would not only address the noise issue but also improve energy efficiency.
Key Improvements:
- Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Installation: We installed an outdoor-rated VFD, which allows the cooling tower motor to start at a lower speed and ramp up gradually, eliminating the disruptive noise associated with high-torque startups.
- Temperature Sensor and Controller: The new system is paired with a temperature sensor and controller, allowing the motor to adjust its speed in real-time based on loop temperature. This enables the motor to run at variable speeds rather than being stuck at 100% power or off.
Benefits:
- Reduced Noise: The VFD soft start significantly reduces startup noise, improving the comfort of nearby residents and businesses.
- Energy Savings: By running at variable speeds, the motor consumes less energy during low-load conditions. This energy-efficient solution provides cost savings and reduces the overall carbon footprint of the system.
Expected Payback:
With typical energy savings, the investment in the VFD system is expected to pay for itself within 1-2 years.
